Well, I had my first cheat in 90 days tonight. It was something I have been craving, especially since there are commercials for it like every other minute on tv! :)

It was surprisingly less tasty than I had imagined. It also made me feel nauseated and SUPER bloated. I wanted to stop halfway though, but didn't want to waste it:). I don't plan to have another one, it was that lackluster. I'm glad I cheated this way, though. It made me realize how wonderful I feel when I don't eat this kind of stuff. I would much rather cheat by eating too much dried fruit or a LaraBar or possibly something like french toast. The dairy with the cookie was just too much for my system. At least I'm assuming it was the combination; dairy in my coffee hasn't been a problem for me.

Super Spicy Buffalo Wings & Celery, Carrot & Almond Salad

Tonight, I decided to make some buffalo wings for the hubby & me:).

Buffalo Wings:
8-12 wings (with tips removed and separated at joint)
3tbs. melted butter
4tbs. hot sauce
1/2tsp. salt
1/4tsp. black pepper
1/2tsp. cayenne pepper
1tbs. paprika

Mix all the ingredients together (except for wings), reserving some of the sauce for basting once cooked. In a ziplock baggie, combine the sauce & wings marinade for a few hours. Make sure to coat each wing with the sauce.

Bake at 375 for 30 minutes, turning once, until well-browned. Baste with reserved sauce.

As a side dish for this, I made a celery, carrot & almond salad (from Mark's Daily Apple).

5-7 stalks celery
3 carrots
1c. almonds

4tsp. lemon juice
1tsp. honey
1/4c. olive oil
1/2tsp. fresh ginger, minced
Salt & pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients and serve cold or at room temperature.

B - Paleo pancake (1/2c. ground almonds, 1/4c. coconut milk, 1 egg, 1 tsp. honey, 2 tsp. maple syrup, 1tbs. coconut oil), 4 med. strawberries, 1/4c. blueberries.
*Decided to double the amount of almonds to help thicken up the pancake. It definitely worked! However, I am horrible at flipping these things b/c they fall apart so easily. Next time I'll use a plate. I also burned it, but it was still yummy with the maple syrup:).

Too many carbs today, I caved and snacked on prunes while making dinner. The tilapia was delicious. I also had quite a bit of sunbutter today. It was somewhat of an acquired taste, but now I really love it! It helps me keep peanut butter out of my diet:).

Down another 2lbs.! This brings my total weight loss to 10lbs. since I started the zone diet and then 22 days of paleo-ish diet.

I know I need to lay off the fruit if I want to lose weight, but the fruit is just so DELICIOUS right now and it is really helping with my sweet cravings. Once fall hits, I plan to switch to pretty much all veggie for my carbs. Until then, I plan to eat as much fruit as my 80 or so grams of carbs will allow:).

Broke my vow to eat only humanely raised/slaughtered meat today by eating a burger at Red Robin. It definitely wasn't as good as the hamburger we get from Ellett Valley Beef Co., but I still think it's better to eat meat out occasionally than to eat that soy crap.

Body comp is starting to show improvement, especially around the waist/hips!

Weathertop Farm

I haven't given a well-deserved shout-out to Weathertop Farm, despite having enjoyed their "satisfied protein" for a few months now. Weathertop Farm brings meat (chicken, rabbit) & eggs to our local farmer's market every Saturday (and maybe Wednesday's too, but I only go Saturday's). Their prices on eggs are cheaper than Wal-Mart & they are delicious. I haven't tried the rabbit yet (hubs is weirded-out), but the chicken is beautiful and very lean. We are stocking up for the winter months when the chickens won't be available. We also have an order reserved for "half a hog". I am really looking forward to that in the fall!

I haven't made it out for a farm visit yet, but I definitely want to. The best things about buying from Weathertop are a) it's local and supporting your local farming community is always a good thing, b) it's SUPER fresh & delicious, & c) best of all, the owners really seem to care about the welfare of their animals.

If you are in the New River Valley, Virginia area, I seriously suggest you check them out. You will not be disappointed! The owners are very friendly and helpful, as well.

Fat Challenge Day 14 - 8.13.09

I have been bad... I've been weighing despite my promise not to. I'm up 2lbs. from yesterday! Although, yesterday, I was down 2lbs. So basically, I haven't lost any weight despite cutting out refined carbs for about 2 weeks and keeping all carbs under 100g/day (most of the time pretty close to 80g). I'm keeping with it in hopes that eventually the weight will drop off. I finished off another jar of natural peanut butter last night, so maybe that's the problem? I plan to cut that out going forward, as well as continue to limit my consumption of Crystal Light.

I need to get back to doing CrossFit as well. I've taken almost a week off, but that's enough.

I did walk both dogs last night, though! :)

I need to make a trip to the Farmer's Market this morning b/c I'm out of eggs! I don't know what I'd do without eggs. I eat about 18/week. Which might be a bit high, but they are the cheapest source of protein and they go with pretty much any meal:).

Today might be a bit of a wonky eating day since we are traveling to northern VA to go to a DMB concert with friends.

Coming up on another weekend:)! We'll be out of town on Saturday, with friends at a concert. I don't think it will be too hard, though. I'll just have to break my vow (for one day) of eating only grass-fed meat. I don't think it will kill my conscience too much.

I think this might be the reason for my overall fuzziness, lack of energy, & general bitchiness to life right now:).
I'm going to extend this challenge to 4 weeks to see if things don't level out by then. Looks like 2 weeks might be too short to get the full effect. Not that I plan to go bad-carb-crazy once my "challenge" is done. But I would like to not have to watch my healthy carb intake so closely.

All in all felt really good today except for the exhaustion. Hopefully my good mood continues:)!

Fat Challenge Day 7 - 8.6.09

Seven days in and I made it through yesterday which I hope was my low point. I desperately wanted something sweet or "grainy". :) Instead, I loaded up on fat. Didn't really satisfy my cravings, but it got me through it without succumbing to temptation.

However, I did succumb to the temptation of Crystal Light. I had two packets yesterday evening. I'm going to try to wean myself off of it instead of go cold turkey. Otherwise, I'm doing too many challenges/changes at once.

Still up 2lbs. but I ate a ton of nuts/seeds yesterday, so maybe that's it. I know I'm obsessing and maybe I should just not weight myself until the end of this challenge.

Breakfast -
2 eggs (fried in olive oil)
1 banana
15 brazil nuts

Lunch -
1 chicken thigh (w/ tandoori marinade)
1c. broccoli
15 almonds, 1/2tsp. butter on broccoli

Snack -
1/2c. grapes
1tsp. natural peanut butter

Dinner -
3/4 chicken breast (w/ SOG's BBQ sauce)
Zucchini & apples (recipe from Paleofood.com)
15 almonds

*New goal after reading Mark Sisson's "How to Eat According to the Primal Blueprint", I'll be attempting to keep my carbs under 80g per day. Today was ~110g.

Fat Challenge Day 4 - 8.2.09

I'm a little nervous about this fat challenge so far since I've gained 2 lbs in three days. I'm going to keep with it for the 2 weeks, though, but if I continue to gain weight, I'm going to cut back on my food intake. Maybe it was the dried fruit??

Breakfast -
2 eggs (fried)
5 blackberries
15 almonds

Snack -
1 banana
sunflower seeds (shelled)

Lunch -
1/4lb. hamburger
Lettuce/onion slices
1c. brussel sprouts
12 almonds

Snack -
sunflower seeds
brazil nuts (4)

Dinner - @ Kabuki (Japanese Steakhouse)
steak (~1oz.)
Zucchini, onions, bean sprouts, lettuce, tomato, cucumber
Ginger dressing, soy sauce, butter, olive oil (in cooking)
*Proud of myself for ignoring the rice!

Snack -
4 strawberries
1 banana
6 pecan halves
2tsp. coconut flakes

Fat Challenge Day 3 - 8.1.09

Today is my first weekend day (which are the hardest for me) on my challenge. Skipped lunch due to 4-wheelin' with my husband & father-in-law. Had a blast, but was STARVING by time we got home.

Breakfast -
9 almonds (right when I woke up to curb my hunger until I ate breakfast an hour or so later)
2 eggs (fried)
5 blackberries
12 almonds

Lunch -
Shelled sunflower seeds while riding a 4-wheeler

Snack -
1 string cheese
1/2c. grapes
1tsp. peanut butter (not natural)

Dinner -
1/4lb hamburger (w/egg & SOG BBQ sauce)
2 slices of tomato, onions
Son of Grok's BBQ sauce
1c. brussel sprouts
+ dried fruit while making dinner

Snack -
Dried fruit & nuts (my splurge for movie night!)
